What Happened to Playa Mamitas?

This photo was taken on June 13, 2024, at what used to be Mamitas Beach.

We all saw the images. On all social media platforms, people kept sharing disastrous pictures of Playa Mamitas, which had completely disappeared and had been swallowed by the sea.

While beach erosion in Playa del Carmen is an issue in the Riviera Maya, those who have lived here for many years know it is perfectly normal and temporary, especially during storm and hurricane seasons.

Take, for example, the photo I have above. It's devastating. Anyone would think that Playa Mamitas has disappeared forever.

However, we couldn't be more wrong. Remember that Playa Mamitas has been here long before us and has risen from the ashes a million times.

Also, hurricanes are not necessarily a destructive phenomenon; they often help rebuild the beaches in Playa del Carmen and take away the sargassum.

That is exactly what happened with Hurricane Beryl. Not only was it very gentle with the region, causing minimal damage, but it also cleaned the beaches and helped them recover.

Playa Mamitas Embracing the Cycle of Renewal

This image shows Playa Mamitas completely renovated and recovered after Hurricane Beryl passed, just one month later. It depicts people enjoying a beautiful sunny day and the stunning Caribbean Sea free of sargassum.
This photo was taken exactly one month later, on 15/07/202. It's like day and night. If you didn't see it for yourself, you wouldn't believe it, right?

For example, this image above was taken exactly one month later. Look at how beautiful the beach is, without a trace of sargassum, the white sand, and the beach recovering.

Playa Mamitas continues to show why it is one of everyone's favorite beaches and makes it clear daily that it has no plans to go anywhere. So don't be fooled by those fatalistic images of temporary phenomena where the beach disappears.

This is perfectly normal and usually happens during certain seasons. So don't wait any longer and enjoy Playa Mamitas's splendor.

Parking, Safety, and Environmental Responsibility

Imagine you’re on a street in Playa del Carmen on a sunny afternoon as the sun is beginning to set. In this scene, you can hear the soft hum of engines and the distant chatter of people. To your left, there’s a parking area with several parking spaces marked by blue lines. In one of these spaces, you can sense the presence of motorcycles. They’re parked neatly in a row, each with a slight vibration from the engines as they idle, and you can feel the smooth, excellent texture of their metal frames if you touch them. Nearby, there’s a parking meter positioned on the sidewalk. It’s a rectangular metal box with a slot to insert coins or a card. The surface of the meter is relaxed and slightly textured, with small, raised buttons that click when pressed. As you approach, you might hear the faint sounds of coins clinking and the digital display lighting up. The meter stands on a pole with a sturdy base, and it’s positioned next to a curb, with a sign indicating the parking rules. The sunlight reflects off its surface, casting a warm, golden hue as the day transitions into the evening.
If you’re visiting the beach and have a car, you need to be mindful of paying for parking. Avoid parking in areas marked with yellow or red lines.

One of the advantages of Playa del Carmen is that you don’t need a vehicle to get to the beach, as you can reach the beach from every corner.

However, if you have a car, remember that the entire tourist area operates with parking meters active from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The cost is 10 pesos per hour.

There are two payment options: coins at the physical parking meter or through the Mueve Ciudad app. However, note that if your mobile phone number is foreign, downloading the app may not be possible.

Be aware of these options for convenient parking in Playa del Carmen.

Also, I suggest not leaving valuables visible in your vehicle to avoid break-ins and theft.

Another important point: although the city and beaches are safe, as in any tourist destination, some opportunistic thieves take advantage of even the slightest negligence to steal your belongings.

Try not to bring valuables to the beach, especially your passport, and keep your things in a visible place if you’re swimming to avoid losing sight of them.

Also, be mindful of the environment: do not leave trash on the beach, especially plastic or cans.

We all know the damage this causes to the ecosystem and no cigarette butts. Bring a bag to dispose of all your trash, and respect the environment.
