What is a Good tip in Playa del Carmen?

A small black folder is placed on a wooden table, containing a 200 pesos bill inside.
In Mexico, a tip of 15% to 20% is recommended for good service. Still, it ultimately depends on your satisfaction and the quality of the service.

The standard minimum tip for average service in Mexico is around 10%. If the service is good, 15% is considered standard, and 20% is appropriate for exceptional service.

However, the amount of tip one chooses to leave is a personal decision. For instance, when I worked as a waiter, I always aimed to provide top-notch service, and it was not unusual for tips to exceed 25% or even more.

It all depends on the waiter or service provider's charisma, attentiveness, and performance.

It's essential to be aware, as it is common in many restaurants to automatically add a 15% to 20% tip to the bill without prior consultation.

Even worse, many establishments, especially bars, not only add this percentage to the bill but also expect additional tips for the servers. This is something to keep in mind.

Exploitation of Exotic Animals on Fifth Avenue

This picture shows a place on Fifth Avenue where tourists can take photos of exotic animals.
Animals are often drugged to keep them calm, and paying for photos with cubs supports their capture and exploitation.

People visiting Fifth Avenue may encounter people offering photos of lions, jaguars, and leopard cubs.

While this may seem like an exciting and unique experience, it's crucial to understand the suffering and abuse these animals endure to be there.

These animals are often drugged to keep them docile and manageable, a cruel and unnatural practice.

When you pay for a photo with these cubs, you directly support the capture and exploitation of wild animals. These animals are ripped from their natural habitats and subjected to extreme conditions to meet the demand from tourists.

Many of them have their claws removed and teeth pulled to prevent them from being a danger, a painful and traumatic process that leaves them defenseless.

Each photo taken represents a contribution to this cycle of mistreatment and death. It's heartbreaking to see these babies in such deplorable conditions, used as mere props for photographs.

Keeping these wild animals on leashes, bottle-feeding them, and posing on people's laps all day is neither natural nor ethical.

I urge you to think twice before paying for a photo. Do not contribute to this industry of abuse. Instead, educate yourself and spread awareness about the reality of these practices among your friends and family.

How to Avoid Silver Scams and Unsolicited Drug Offers

This image shows a store selling silver jewelry on Fifth Avenue.
There are many stores offering silver. Make sure to buy from a reliable store to avoid fraud.

While visiting the Fifth Avenue, it's common to encounter street vendors selling various items, including drugs.

I have lived in this city for 20 years and can confirm that being offered drugs on every corner of 5th Avenue is a frequent occurrence. Remember to ignore any unsolicited offers and continue exploring 5th Avenue.

It's crucial to exercise utmost caution when considering a purchase of silver jewelry, as the market is saturated with counterfeit items.

Before making any silver purchases, you must verify that you are buying from a reputable store to avoid falling victim to Playa del Carmen scams. Additionally, check out this helpful guide on identifying authentic silver items.

Tequila Scams on Fifth Avenue in Playa del Carmen

This image shows a tequila store on Mexico Playa del Carmen 5th Avenue
There is a wide variety of stores offering tequila. Ensure that what you taste in the sample is what you get in the bottle.

Be cautious of overpriced tequila scams, too. Sometimes, a seller may tempt you with a sample of delicious tequila to convince you to purchase.

However, when you open the bottle at home, you might find it's different from the tequila you tasted. If you buy a bottle, test it to confirm that it's the same tequila you enjoyed at the store.

Visit La Europea on Quinta Alegria Shopping Mall to avoid overpriced tequila scams and ensure the secure purchase of genuine tequila. Check out my article dedicated to this store: La Europea Playa del Carmen.

Is It Safe to Use ATMs in Playa del Carmen?

BBVA ATM on Fifth Avenue is in a secure area with surveillance
Use ATMs from recognized banking institutions that have cameras or are located in reputable shopping centers only.

Avoid using ATMs on Fifth Avenue under any circumstances. They are a notorious tourist trap, capable of stealing your information, trapping your money, and preventing you from accessing it.

If your money does not come from the ATM, immediately call the tourist police. Your cash is likely stuck due to a device set by criminals. However, the police know these tricks and can help retrieve the trapped money.

Only withdraw cash from ATMs in banks or shopping centers where security and security cameras exist.

The "I Am Your Waiter at the Hotel. Remember Me?" Scam

This image shows a photo of Playa del Carmen 5th Ave with several vendors and tourists.
All the Fifth Avenue vendors recognize hotel wristbands. They may approach you, pretending to be your server to sell you their products.

The vendors on Fifth Avenue are savvy and can recognize the bracelet from your hotel. They may use this opportunity to approach you and try to sell you a product, pretending to be a server from your hotel.

Avoid falling into the trap of vendors who approach you and claim to be a waiter at your hotel, as this is a common practice.
