Is It Safe to Go Downtown Playa del Carmen? Get the Facts

Downtown Playa del Carmen is very safe. There is a strong police presence on the streets, and I have never had an incident to regret.

Is It Safe to Go Downtown Playa del Carmen? Yes, it is 100% safe. I have never been robbed in the twenty-one years I have lived here.


To give you an idea, I lived much of my life in Mérida, Yucatán, which is considered the safest city in Mexico, and I was robbed twice.


The downtown area of Playa del Carmen is safe. While news often shows violence between rival cartels, this mainly occurs in northern Mexico, like Tamaulipas and Sonora, where drug production is prevalent.


For another example, it is rare in Mexico to hear about a shooting in a school or a movie theater, something that occurs frequently in the United States. Do you understand what I'm saying?


So don't be fooled by sensationalist news; the downtown area of Playa del Carmen is safe for locals and foreigners.
