Is It Safe to Go to Playa del Carmen Right Now? Stay Safe

Updated: Oct 27

Playa del Carmen is a very safe place; however, like any tourist destination, it's essential to use common sense and avoid tourist traps.

Is It Safe to Go to Playa del Carmen Right Now? Yes, but it's essential to be mindful, like any tourist destination. Here are some safety tips to ensure a worry-free trip:

  • Use common sense.

  • Avoid wandering drunk through the city or displaying your wallet full of money.

  • Don't carry drugs. It could lead to police intervention and bribe requests.

  • Avoid trouble with taxi drivers. Also, people should avoid offering banned substances on Fifth Avenue.

  • Stay away from the beach after midnight. It is low-visibility and little supervised, reducing the risk of robbery.

  • Carry your passport only when necessary to cut the risk of losing it.

  • Never leave your phone on tables or counters, even for a minute. Doing so increases your chances of losing it.

  • Don't use Uber-like apps for transport. A significant conflict exists between taxi drivers and these apps. So, avoid risk by not using them.

I've lived in Playa del Carmen for 20 years. I base my recommendations on my experiences and foreign friends' views on safety.

To call the police in Playa del Carmen, dial 911. Depending on your location and background, the police might send local or tourist police.
